The worst weather and a little girl on a pink bike

It was the worst weather. Ever. My entire drive down to Tacoma was spent in heavy rain and when I arrived it had still not let up. And not only did this little darling and her parents brave the wind and rain and cold, but they did it with a smile! The perfect clients. Really and truly.

After being extremely chilled to the bone so much that my eyes were tearing up, we ended the session with a cupcake at hello, cupcake downtown to get warm. It made it all worth it! I couldn't help but take a picture outside with this darling pink bike.

These photos were taken on a not ideal-gloomy-rainy-gray-Seattle-day in quite literally, this family's backyard.

And I love these photos.

I love them because they show the dark sand and clouds and rain boots that are most definitely needed in the Northwest. I love them because I can still hear the dogs on the beach barking as they played fetch in the water. But most of all I love them because as I saw this family interact with each other while the salty wind blew their hair, I knew that what I was capturing was THEM. Their life. Their laughter. Their love. And gosh- it was just beautiful.

This gorgeous family was the reason I went to Utah for Thanksgiving! Belinda sent me a teasing message that I should come and take her family pictures since all her siblings and parents would be there over the weekend. I said, "Why not?" and so I loaded my kids and hubby up and we hit the road! As a bonus to our adventure, we were able to see my in-laws and have Thanksgiving with them. It was SUCH a great weekend and I am anxious to do it again someday soon. Thanks for inviting me Lenhard Fam!

We did something really new-to-me and photographed at the State Capitol in Salt Lake City. It was a large group with extended family and knowing the weather might be bad, she set it up for us to do it there just in case we needed to go inside. Isn't the stone so pretty? I absolutely love how their bright clothes look against it!

Autumn Magic {Seattle Engagement Session)

This couple was so dreamy to photograph. Intimate and loving and genuinely wonderful people made this photo session so fun for me. And can you get over how classic they look? No matter what outfit...timeless.

The weather was dark and cloudy on my drive into Seattle and I was afraid that we wouldn't be able to get the magical Sunset photos they had wanted. But when we went up to the roof the sun peeked out for a quick surprise!
It was just in time for the perfect kiss.

Be prepared...there are a zillion kissing pictures....but truly, can they be more magical?

So I kinda fell in love with this family the moment they said hello. Overly kind and fun and relaxed and it made the session a breeze. The kids were super smiley and sweet--perfect to photograph, really. How did I get so lucky to have this job? Even after a reschedule due to rain (go figure in Seattle) the day and light could not have been more perfect.

I have been waiting in anticipation for the perfect weather and Fall colors to awaken my senses due to so much rain lately and well folks, it's HERE! I love this little family (as seen here and here and here and here) and I couldn't be more thrilled with these pictures. My job is just so dang easy with them...it's like I just have to show up and their gorgeousness will be ready to capture. Makes me so happy.

Lori told me to please deal with her crazy idea of putting her babe in a pumpkin. I laughed at it when she told me--but oh my gosh she was so smart. Adorable! The best part? These pumpkins are all home grown (seriously-like in her garden)!

Modern Parents Messy Kids Session

Have you been following the awesome blog Modern Parents Messy Kids? I found it a few months ago when the world turned upside down about this genius paint chip garland that Steph made. Well, as blog-land would have it, I noted that we lived in the same neck of the woods and so I left a comment with a question. We then had some lovely email conversations about how Fall birthdays in rainy Seattle certainly make for hard outdoor kid parties. Apparently, we were a distraught Mother's match made in heaven. So then, what else would there be for me to do than to beg her to let me photograph her family? Er...maybe she begged me? Can we make it mutual beg-iness?

I was SO excited to meet them and they did not disappoint. They are hip and cool and down to Earth and made my job super easy. Oh!- and they are gorgeous. Like...make me feel insecure about myself gorgeous. Good thing I have a sparkling personality;)

Auction Winner Family Session

Last year I auctioned off a photo session package where the proceeds went to a little girl who was struggling with liver cancer. This sweet mama bid and won, and we finally had the chance to meet! Her family was absolutely adorable--and super loving with one another (which of course, makes my job so easy). I love these images--the candid and sweet. I can't help but look at these pictures and see joy.

A Sun-filled Wedding

It was pouring down rain as I drove to the Jardin de Sol in Snohomish. The sky was dark gray--the kind of gray that doesn't let sunlight through even within a few hours. About a mile from my destination I noticed a traffic jam. I was thankfully early, but traffic was barely moving due to a serious accident ahead. When I finally arrived, everyone else was late due to the elements and I had no idea how this outdoor wedding was even going to work. There was no back-up plan, so everyone crossed their fingers for the rain to let up. And miraculously, it did! The moment the bridal party began to get ready the skies cleared and the sun peaked out. It was incredible. And even more incredible? This couple! So awesome. So relaxed. So no-fuss. So happy. They had already created this adorable human being and their love had been set from the get go. It was such a confident love. I didn't notice any jitters or stress...just love and adoration for the sweet little family they had officially become. It was wonderful to see.

The I Heart Faces challenge this week was using white in a color photo! My-oh-my this was a tough one. As I was searching for what I could use I kept coming back to this one... in retrospect the only "white" is this Mama's shirt. But the new life that she is holding represents such purity and innocence and so I think it sums up this week's theme nicely;)

You know the kind of people that you hang out with simply because you feel better about yourself when you do? That's them. It's happy vibes all the way. They are incredibly cool and talented (check out their shop) and gosh darnit...just good looking.

And can you get a load of this toothless grin? Adorable.

It was a really relaxing session as we strolled along a darling Seattle neighborhood and I loved every moment of it. It was also an especially exciting day because their sweet babe got his first taste of donut-y sugar via my request to eat sweets and be cool while I take a picture. Ahhhh..the sacrifices we must all make.

I don't update this blog often enough...and here's a perfect example of it. Almost TWO years ago--I took a few snapshots of a family friend and her new husband. We were in Utah for my bro-in-law's wedding and we stayed at her lovely log home in Logan. When my husband got ill during our visit, she was a great source of stability by letting all of our extended family stay during the traumatic event. To thank her, I took a few photos in their wedding attire since they didn't have many from the big day.

Spring Photography Workshop 2011

I am NOT an expert, but I do have my own self-taught approach. If you like my style, and simply want to learn how to take better photos of your family or are starting up a business for yourself, this might be fun for you.

Class is 2 hours outside plus an optional 1 hour treat/chat session afterwards for any other questions.

We will be covering:

How to break out of the rut and use your manual exposure
Natural lighting techniques
Shooting an actual family photo session with an actual real live family! :)

I threw my friend a "Got Milk?" Baby Shower and one of the activities was to take every one's pictures using the advertising concept. I love how they turned out with just a simple black sheet and some window light! We dabbed on some heavy cream for that awesome milk mustache. You can see the entire shower here.

What does one do exactly once they have discovered that they have ripped their pants? Having never experienced this madness before, I have to ask...

Ready for a good laugh? You got it!

Picture this: I'm on the ground crawling around like I normally do when I am photographing babies (you aren't paying me to be pretty, after all;) My pants get dirty, my knees get scraped, I get a light cardio workout and it's the usual fun and active photo session sha-bang. And then I hear it. A rip. I'm pretty sure it's discreet...but upon further investigation I recognize the fact that this could be very very bad. Problem is...I'm not exactly sure when it first happened? I know the extent of the damage now, but when did it begin? Was it when I was lunging up and down and chasing this sweet babe on the grass? Was it when I was crawling flat on my stomach in the road? Was it when I asked this cute family to excuse me while I did a back flip for fun? Er...wait...maybe that wasn't this time...

But regardless, I ripped my pants and well...I felt a little bit embarrassed. Maybe. Kinda. Definitely. But then I had a choice to make. I could either point it out and flaunt my rip like the dare-devil in me and we could all gather 'round the campfire laughing over chai tea, or I could discreetly pretend that they didn't notice and leave like nothing had ever happened. I chose to leave like nothing had ever happened. And I am pretty sure they were cool with that.

You guys were cool with that, right?

Ahhh...I love my job. Totally worth it.

Even though they WERE my favorite pants. heehee.

I just might be a tad jealous of these lusciously long eyelashes!

This kiddo was incredibly good. And well, need I say how adorable?

This family (dad+mom+twins) is amazing. A few weeks ago we showed up to the shoot and my camera did.not.work. I was MORTIFIED. And they were beyond kind and chill and patient and understanding. I left distraught, but thankfully, my camera was repaired and we were able to reschedule. And then reschedule again because of rain. And THEN...finally...we captured this. Aren't they just darling?

Magic in the Rain {Seattle Photography Workshop}

Truly, the photography workshop that I taught turned out to be great.

(Can I even call it teaching? It was so easy and relaxed.)
Just hoping my students agree.

It was a lovely group of budding photographers that made magic in the Seattle rain. So glad I could be a part of it! We hit downtown Renton for our photo shoot/workshop and then ended the night at Common Ground Coffee and Cupcakes (my favorite.) Hope everyone had as much fun as I did!

That my own website makes me cry? I went to it today to see if possibly any changes needed to be made...and I watched it...watched the photographs as they progressed in each category...and I couldn't help but get teary eyed. Maybe it was the music. Maybe it was the relationships that I saw on that screen. Maybe it was the love that I have for my clients. But it made me cry happy tears...and I am oh so grateful for this part-time job of mine. It brings such joy to me. Thank you.

Renae is one of the prettiest mama's I have ever met. I remember photographing her first baby bump (I can't believe he is 3!), and this time was just as perfect. Her laughter is absolutely contagious!

It's been a long time since I have entered an I Heart Faces challenge, but the challenge this week seemed to prick my heart enough to get back on board.

I LOVE photographing mothers with their children. More than any other set-up, for sure. I have so many that I love, but for some reason I keep returning to this one. There is something about the way she is looking at her son... I was so grateful to be a part of this moment.

Miss me? I hope so! I have taken a much needed break because of job relocation, etc! But now I am back in the saddle. Back to doing what I love... but with possible changes this year.

So, here's a chance to give feedback and advice on the questions I have for you!

1) Website: Would you like it updated? Is information easy to follow and navigate through?

2) Pricing: Would you like the cd automatically added in the session price (reducing the price a bit), or do you prefer to have the option separate?

3) Classes: I am considering offering a "shadowing session" for a small group in the Seattle area. The class would include how to's with manual exposure, natural lighting techniques, and simply how a photo shoot for me is "attacked," regardless of who it is for and the location. We will actually be doing a photo shoot, allowing first hand experience.

PHEW. 2 parents. 7 kiddos. 5 spouses. 8 grandchildren. I'm exhausted.

No really, they were fabulous to work with and always have been. There are so many funny connections. Tara and I went to church together until they moved to the Big Apple. We also bought their car. That's a fun fact that I am sure all my readers wanted to know. Tara's mom-in-law works with my favorite bride ever Erin, which we did not discover until a couple weeks ago. Vivian is close friends with the ultra-talent Andrea whom I adore. I feel like I am famous because everyone knows me. I am famous, right?

Oh, and they are all MODELS. And their spouses are flipp'n gorgeous too. I showed up sick, with no make-up on and a heavy puffy coat while they showed up GORGEOUS. Whose photo shoot was this anyway? Talk about intimidation. But since I have great self-esteem, I got over it by chanting "I have self-esteem" over and over and over again.

And here is Vivian with her man. I love the intimacy of this photo. And gorgeous children. All of them.

These two were hilario. I figured, since they were all models we should do a photo shoot like one. They were angry, and sad, and shocked. And this is the shot in between where she is laughing at her super hero man.

I love it.

And I ALMOST posted the jazz hands picture of all of them. But I'm being nice. Unless I decide to not be nice one day. Which is a very big possibility. Just ask my husband.

Wish I could post more, but remember that I am sick and exhausted and intimidated er-I mean-totally not intimidated because I have to stare at such gorgeous people while I am editing.

I hope my last post didn't make people think that I don't love this line of work. Yes, I am crazy busy, but yes I crazy love it.

I am so very thankful for my clients -- the joy they express when they see their photos is enough to make me shout "wahoo!". Seriously. I do. Ask my husband. Every stink'n time.

I really truly madly deeply love this.

And for a silly change of pace, some of my own babes. Inspiration, let me tell ya!

Movement {Seattle Family Photographer}

The only time I can do photoshoots these days is Saturday and the only time I can edit during the week is late at night. I work from 9am until 6pm, then it's home for dinner and kid time and bedtime and spouse time and then finally edit time. My plate right now is full and sometimes I feel weary about the rush of this season.

In this moment though, when I am oh-so-tired, my eyes tear up in gratitude to be editing this session.

It was an odd one at first. Super cold and rainy. The kids were not too happy. Shy but sweet, and although I did not care if they were shy, I did care that they were uncomfortable. And so I asked Mama for a re-shoot. "Let me get the kids in their element, at home, in their happy place where they can be themselves," I said.

It was a sacrifice on my part, to drive so far, give up my very spare family time, and do it all over again. But it was so worth it!

There is a photography secret that we all hopefully vow not to break. Whatever you do, only post your BEST photos. Never post those that are imperfect. But sometimes I wonder what is truly my best? My answer is ones that move me.

Yesterday my son turned to me in the car and said, "I'm mad!" I had to laugh for a couple reasons: 1)he's just starting to be able to communicate in a feeling/talking sort of way and 2)his face was so serious and his response so random that I couldn't help but laugh.

His mad-ness made me think about how things are going for me right now. Good, in fact. Except for one teeny tiny huge problem.

My computer crashed. Ugh. Pictures are safe-- no worries! However, I have been computer-less for almost a week now (writing this post at work in fact) and it is driving me insane. I can't edit your pictures. I can't give sneak peeks. I can't upload your proofs to your gallery to view. I am stuck and I am mad.

So for now, please accept my apology for my lateness for all of these things. My computer is getting fixed, but also taking too long in my book. Soon.. .I promise!!

And for now, it's okay if you are mad too:)

It was pouring rain outside when we planned this session, so we had to take drastic action

and -ahem-go indoors. Shocked? So am I.

But it worked.

We went to a great gardening center called Molbaks in Woodinville that had a beautiful poinsetta tree and lovely Christmas decor. It was the perfect backdrop for a red and green photo shoot! And oh my! Call me naive, but I had no idea there were so many different types of poinsettas. I wanted them all.

I LOVE this family. I've been photographing them for 2 years now

and each time they get cuter and cuter.

You'd be surprise to know that this little man was unhappy/MIA for the first half of our session. Check out that gorgeous smile!

I have a wonderful family in mind! I have a dear friend who has this beautiful little family. When I say beautiful, I don't just mean on the outside, but on the inside too. They have suffered some serious challenges in the past couple of years, but that has never stopped them from having a positive outlook, loving life, and still serving others.

They are the Vanegas Family and they are comprised of Jairo, Melanie, and Ethan. Jairo was diagnosed with a brain tumor about 4 years ago, had surgery, underwent chemotherapy and radiation, and made it through. Since that time he and Melanie have taken the opportunity to show how precious life is through their actions. They have raised money for Lance Armstrong's LiveStrong charity, Melanie kept going to school and finished her nursing degree throughout the ordeal so that she could help others, and then despite Jairo’s diagnosis, they did not want to wait to have a child and used invitro fertilization to have their son, Ethan.

Every 6 months or so, Jairo has to have tests run to see if the cancer has returned. I know these appointments must be terrifying, but they keep their chins up. They could question God, feel like He is being unfair, and ask why them, but instead, they both serve as youth leaders in at church, and are ALWAYS willing to give a helping hand to those around them AND with a smile.

Unfortunately, they were dealt more difficult news recently. Melanie's mother now has cancer. Despite the fear and this scary time they are enduring, they continue to smile, to live life to the fullest, to be great people. They have trust in God and truly feel blessed despite all their challenges. They don't ever say much about what they have gone through or continue to go through. In fact, they would probably be embarrassed if they knew I was doing this, but I SWEAR, they are the most deserving people I know. I admire them so much and would love to give them this gift for Christmas! Please choose them...it would make my day and my holiday season! Thank you!

Falling for new friends

Here's how it went:

I was in the checkout at the Gap the morning after I arrived in Seattle. I was rushed. I was disheveled. I was exhausted. I was recognized.

When I gave my zipcode, since it was still a Florida one, a woman behind me suddenly said,

"Are you Carrie Stroud?"

I turned around. "Yes" -- and my inner voice said, "Yahoo I must be famous!"

But no, not really:)

"I'm Andrea!"

"Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh!" I said. Andrea who has been emailing me for the past year. Andrea who has been super complimentary of my work. Andrea who has become a great photographer herself and is so excited to learn more and more each day. I love Andrea.

However, I was so rushed so I blubbered something stupid and said see ya and ran out the door.

Thankfully, she still liked me anyway.

Fast forward to our get together. An adorable family shoot and teaching session. They are the coolest and cutest bunch ever. Andrea has a great camera and simply wants to take better pictures of her family, so I was able to show her a few of my techinques. Her daughters were the perfect models too. I really can't believe I get paid to have that much fun!

Boy Crazy {Seattle Newborn Photographer}

I am crazy in love with this one. Arn't you? I swear it took every inch of self-control to not take this three week old home with me!

And his parents! Where should I start? First of all, his mama has the best hair I have ever seen in my life. All those hair care commercials, she puts them to shame! She was also one of the most loving new mama's I have had the privilege of photographing.

His daddy is oh-so-large-in-stature, so it was a loving laugh that his wife and I had when his great big hands tried to hold his tiny babe in all the poses that I asked him to.

It was my first photo session back in Seattle, and I couldn't have asked for a better one.

I just love it when I have the opportunity to take photos of children as they grow. Remember little Will? It's been six months since I took his last photos and there is already such a personality blooming. It was like pulling teeth to get him to look up. Apparently, mom and dad need to take him outdoors more due to his fascination with grass and dirt! Boys will be boys, afterall! But really, how adorable is he? So cute.

It's been awhile since I have participated since we're about to move back to Seattle in a couple weeks...but today seemed like a good day to try!

This weeks challenge theme is "contemplative" and although I have many that would fit, this picture of my daughter and her great-grandmother speaks to me more than any other.

Perhaps it's my daughters "true and tight" hug, or TUDY- as we call her- staring out with such wisdom and grace. Any way you look at it, my eyes tear up in gratitude to know and love such a wonderful woman.

My little brother-in-law, recently got married (gasp!) in the Logan, Utah Temple a few weeks ago. Because my hubby was in the hospital we missed the wedding, so I was unable to get any pictures there. Thank goodness her sister is a photographer too!

They came back to the South for a fun Italian reception (that I planned!) and while I was there we were able to sneak away for a little photo shoot in downtown Columbus, Ga. My new sister-in-law is adorable and as much as it "wierds me out" to see him married...I have to admit that they are so stink'n cute! I am so glad he found such a perfect match.

What a fantastic family! Cathy has been a fan of mine for some time (isn't she a sweetie?) and so I was so very happy when I got the chance to photograph her family in Utah. I was also very lucky because another local photographer, Vivian, decided to shoot with me as well and she knew of the perfect spot since she only lived five minutes away!

This family was a dream to photograph. It didn't hurt that I absolutely love them ... as my hubby and their dad have been friends forever. I am just so so thankful to have them in our life. When I was stuck traveling to get to Utah (read about that here), they just happened to be there to help with my husband and take him to the ER. They stood by his side when I couldn't, and I will be forever grateful.

Oh--and Belinda packed me a lunch for my photoshoot travels. How cool is that?

This was the first time I got to meet this little one. Beautiful.

hello all...

It has been a whirlwind of a week out in Utah. Hubby was hospitalized shortly after we landed and just yesterday I had to fly home with my kiddos without him. You can read more about it here. Unfortunately, I had to cancel way too many Utah photo shoots because of these events.

However, I did get a chance to photograph some that were closer by...so I will take some time to get those sneak peeks up here as soon as I can. And maybe next time, Utah will be a bit more fun:)

Here's my photo for this week's challenge. I am such a sucker for feet pictures. I ALWAYS take them in every shoot, no matter how young or old you are. I swear, feet can speak about a personality better than anything else. It's where you've been and where you are going, you know?

It was tough to choose because I have so many feet pictures. But this one has always made me smile. I took it when I first began this photography journey of mine and it's of a dear friend and her two girls. It's an oldy but goody... and one that makes me giggle and wish that I had some pink cowgirl boots in my size.

In fact, the past few years I really shunned the whole idea and practically had to be begged to do any weddings at all. But THIS wedding kindled a passion in me I had never felt before. Just wondering

I am in a bit of a photography funk. Normally I would do a post like this on my personal blog, for fear of my fears getting out into the public. However, if you accept my photography you accept me... and that means all of me. The happy and not so happy.

I feel so inadequate at times with so many amazing photographers out there. Now, I am really going out on a limb here admitting this because my husband always says, "confidence is sexy."
So pardon me, but you'll have to forgive my un-sexiness.

But I wonder, what do I have to offer? I began this photography journey of mine hoping to capture my own babes. And then I fell in love with capturing yours too. The fact that I could capture that moment, the one that happens when no one else is looking, elevates my heart to a whole new level of happiness. I dance. I really do.

But lately my feelings of inadequacy have stepped into the limelight. Again, what do I have to offer as a photographer when there are so many others that can and will do better than me? Am I different enough? Am I talented enough? Am I smart enough? Frankly, am I good enough?

And really, I just don't know....

Summer Photo Party {Tallahassee Photographer}

My friend Kim (who's moving *sniff sniff*) hosted a photo party at the lovely Maclay Gardens. As the hostess she recieved a discount for her own mini-session, while those that attended were also able to get a scream'n good deal in a very small amount of time (10-15 minutes per family).

I really love doing these parties because they can be as elaborate or simple as you want and everyone walks away with some great pictures. I mean, like, if I weren't the photographer, I would TOTALLY go to one! hee hee.

Some people ask if it's even possible to get any good photos within such a small time frame. I don't know. You tell me....

Thanks for your patience! I'll try to answer these the best that I can. If I'm not being thorough enough, feel free to email me for specifics:) Some questions are answered within another question because they work together.

How did you get into photography? When my daughter was 1 1/2 I was so annoyed with my blurry pictures. I decided I needed a good camera because I really wanted to capture what she looked like and suddenly photography became very important to me. I invested in a good slr film camera, but it wasn't until my friend asked me to take photos at her wedding that I invested more money into a professional film one. At that point I just always shot in Auto mode. I figured the camera knew what it was doing, and it usually did!

The extent of classes I have taken are two 1/2 day seminars. Both very inspirational in a business sense, but the basics I have learned on my own. I have always *meant* to take a class, but it just never happened. However, there are so many that I would like to attend someday. I am completely self-taught, but I do recommend attending a class at some point to learn how your camera works. For me, books just don't cut it. I need a person there showing me the ropes.

Do you always shoot in RAW? How do you post-process?

I went digital a few years ago, but initially it was a disaster for me. I shot in jpeg and had no idea how photoshop worked because again, no training. I had some great photographer friends who mentioned RAW to me one day. I have never looked back. Suddenly, my digital pictures could look like my film ones. The problem with Raw is that it takes up a ton more room. But if you want a more professional look to your pictures, it's worth it.

I do all my editing in RAW. Black and white conversion, sharpening, you name it. The extent of my editing ends there. I try to take the picture well the first time so I don't have to do too much. I see a lot of photographers who use actions. I think they are great--but I am not one who uses them alot. Some people say I'm missing out by not using them. I just like the natural look, I guess and maybe one day I will further my exploration of them! Here's an example of my editing:

Not a lot done, but enough to make it look good to my eyes. I increased the contrast a bit and warmed up the temp to change her skin tone back to how it actually looks in real life. And that's it.

What's equipment do you use? I have a Nikon D200 and 2 lenses that I love. My wide-angle 14-28 2.8 and my fixed 50 1.4. Those lenses are what make my photos good. The lower the aperture the better the sharp front/blurry background will be. So if you want that look, you have to get a lens that can do that. The sharp eyes I am often asked about are because of that 2.8. I also mostly always shoot in manual mode in order to keep that 2.8. Otherwise the camera auto mode will switch it higher.

Good SLR camera's have become very affordable these days and tons of people have them. However, paying $700 for a camera is still quite a lot! I always suggest getting a model a couple years old off of ebay or craigslist. Make sure it is USA built, but otherwise you can get a great camera for 1/2 the price. Any Canon Rebel-type or Nikon are optimal in my book.

How do you get action shots of your kids without them going blurry? Haha. A fast shutter speed is the answer. And a lot of patience! I take A LOT of photos of my kids, knowing that 75% might not work. But that 1 photos makes it all worth it:) If your camera has an action setting--use it when you're playing around on the playground. Making sure you have enough light is another way to reduce blurriness. I don't ever use a flash. I just make sure my window shades are up if I am inside or we go outside.

When and where do you take your photos? Rustic, brick, nasty buildings are my favorite. I will choose that over a green leafy background any day! More specifically, I look at texture. Facial expressions really pop if they are in front of great texture. I also love color. Red wall, turquoise wall, green wall. I love them all. You can find these locations in the worst part of town..and that's where you should go! In the daylight, of course:)

I do all my newborn shoots in the client's home. A lot of people are weary of doing this because you don't know if the home will have enough light etc. However, I can always find light and the comfort of my client and that new baby is worth it! If there is a window, I can make it work. I usually switch furniture around and move from room to room.

The best time of day to photograph is right before sunset or after sunrise. However, you have to time yourself well to make sure there is enough light left in the evening. I can usually shoot anytime of day though because of the locations I pick. I use buildings, and so there is always a shadow on some side.

Cloudy days are best, but sunny days are lovely as well. Just always shoot in the shade. I refuse to shoot where light will get speckled on the face. It ruins a photo for me.

Is it possible to take good photos with a point and shoot camera? I think so, although I am not an expert. The best advice I can give is to get on their level. I am always down on the ground getting extremely dirty at eye level with the kids/babies and as close as I can get.

How do you design a logo in photoshop? I wish I could answer that! I finally came to realize that I am talented in photography. I also came to realize that I am NOT talented in graphic design. I have zero experience. And so my logo came from the lovely Rita. She did everything I didn't have the time to do, and since my logo was important to me, I researched what I wanted and who I wanted extensively.

What props do you use? I rarely do because I think they often detract from the person--but the props I love are ones with TEXTURE. Just think about viewing a photo in b&w, and could you see what the object is? I will bring different fabric to wrap a baby in, or for instance, I used an umbrella in a maternity shoot. I knew the umbrella curve would go well with the belly curve. This image was nothing like what I had envisioned, but I love it anyway!

I also took a picture of a belly with a teacup on it. I didn't do it because I thought it would look cool (although it did). I used the teacup idea because she drinks tea almost every day..and those kind of props are meaningful.

Today is the day

So this AM I woke up and ran to my computer screen to see myself featured on Little Birdie Secrets. I have been insanely excited, to say the least, for a few reasons. For one, I am being featured for a giveaway--and who doesn't love those? I sure do. Like...a lot.

For two, this blog is one I check often because they have fantastic tips and tricks on how to make things. And I love to fake people out. Like I just came up with a genius craft idea on my own. Boy, I had you fooled, didn't I?

For three, well, how cool is it to be featured? I'm feeling some major happy vanity here.

However, I went to check out myself this morning when I realized that I wasn't up yet. They are having a week of giveaway's and multiple ones go up each day. So sometime today I'll be on. But then I started thinking..which is never a good thing...

-maybe they chickened out

-maybe they suddenly thought, "hey--she's not THAT cool, so let's forget about her."

-maybe they'll put me on and have nothing good to say about me. I'll be the only post with an "oh ya-here's this photographer--so you can try to win a session from her if you want--but you don't have to--whatev."

Or maybe I'll just be patient and wait for the day to go on and get over myself. haha.

Luke & Erin - Beach Wedding Part I

There are way too many photos to put in one post, so I decided to split it into a few.

Erin was my son's speech therapist in Seattle. She graduated from Florida State University (my in-law's stomping ground), so we always chatted about the football games at each of her visits with Kai. She is seriously the cutest gal ever! We loved her and were sad to say goodbye when we left.

Then, after we moved from Seattle to Tallahassee (her college town), she got engaged and decided to get married here in Florida where she grew up. And would I photograph her wedding on the beach? "HECK YA!"
